How Much Fat, Carbohydrate, & Protein Should You Be Eating?

If you’re on a journey of getting fit and healthy, being aware of what you’re eating is important. In fact, nutrition plays a key role in your health more than hitting the gym itself. In which case, knowing how much fat, carbohydrate, and protein you should be eating daily will act as a guideline in helping you to reach your goal.

How Many Percent A Day

Based on the 2010 Dietary Guidelines, fat consumption should be between 20% to 35% of one’s total daily calories. In comparison, carbohydrates should make up for 45% to 65% with a minimum of 130 grams a day, and protein should be within 10% to 35% of daily calories. These are the recommended ranges for when you’re planning your meals. However, these numbers aren’t the only thing to take into consideration.

Types Of Fat

Unlike protein and carbohydrate, fat has the most calories. Hence, choosing the right type of fat to consume is important. When planning your meals, go for mono-unsaturated or poly-unsaturated fat. Between the two, mono-unsaturated fats such as olive, nut oils, and avocado, are healthier because they lower bad cholesterol (LDL). Aside from these two fats, you might want to limit saturated fats that come from animals while staying clear of trans-fat from processed food.

Know Your Carbohydrates

First, there are good carbs. Good carbs are complex carbohydrates such as grains, lentils, and beans, that raise your blood sugar slowly. It will help to keep you feeling satiated for a longer time while maintaining your blood sugar levels. Then, there are bad carbs. Bad carbs are fast-acting carbohydrates such as candy, cake, soda, and juice, that raise your blood sugar quickly. They won’t satisfy hunger and might cause you to eat more instead. So choose your carbohydrates wisely.

What About Protein?

Simply remember that your body needs protein to grow and function. Thus, always ensure that you consume adequate amounts of protein daily.

Floral patterns and polka dots never seem to go out of style. They make any piece in your attire look retro yet trendy at the same time. Unlike other patterns, these two make nostalgia fashionable for both work and play.

How Many Calories Is That Popular Malaysian Food?

You’ve probably heard that being healthy starts with your diet—watching the kinds of food you consume on a daily basis. But in a country like Malaysia, full of sumptuous, mouth-watering delights, eating right can be a challenge. So to help you with your next meal, here are the calories to keep in mind when making a decision.

#1 Nasi Lemak

A single pack of nasi lemak biasa is approximately 400 calories. According to My Fitness Pal, you’ll need an hour of cycling to burn a delicious whole pack.

#2 Rojak

A plate of Indian Rojak is a whopping 752 calories while a Chinese Fruit Rojak is about 443 calories. Whichever you’re craving for, why not share the plate with a friend?

#3 Char Kuey Teow

Don’t get a heart attack but a plate of Char Kuey Teow is about 744 calories. Having char kuey teow for lunch is only a bad idea if you’re having it every single day. Remember, moderation is key!

#4 Roti Canai

On its own, without any addition of eggs, cheese, or bananas, a single Roti Canai Kosong is 301 calories. So don’t worry, your tea time snack is rather moderate in its calorie count.

#5 Chicken Rice

Chicken Rice is probably one of the most common meals in Malaysia, especially when we can’t decide on what to eat. For a meal with adequate amounts of protein, it comes out to approximately 620 calories.

#6 Asam Laksa

Craving for something sour? It’s hard to resist the wafting smell of a savoury bowl of Asam Laksa. Fortunately, it is 432 calories a bowl—not as guilty as our other Malaysian meals.

#7 Curry Laksa

Perhaps you prefer Curry Laksa over asam laksa. If so, a single serving of nyonya curry laksa is around 534 calories—a little over 100 calories in comparison to its tart variation, but still not too sinful.

#8 Banana Leaf Rice

Ah, the food coma meal—Banana Leaf Rice. Before you tambah nasi, tambah gravy, and tambah all the side dishes, a banana leaf rice set starts off at 446 calories. But, as you probably know, it’s impossible not to top up.

The Most Basic Skincare Routine You Can Get Away With

From the Korean 10-step routine to the less complicated 5-step procedure, what is the most basic skincare routine that you can actually get away with? Emily Newsom, a board-certified dermatologist at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, told SELF that a skincare routine can be simplified into 3 steps. Yes, just 3 simple steps! What are they?

Step 1: Cleanse

Cleansing your face is a must as it will remove dirt, makeup, excess oil, dead skin cells, and other unwanted impurities that have been collected on your face throughout the day. Daily cleansing not only removes this build up but boosts hydration levels within your skin and impedes breakouts too.

Step 2: Moisturise

If you do not plan to apply anything else, a moisturiser will do. A moisturiser ensures that your skin’s protective barrier is functioning optimally. It helps your skin to maintain a youthful look by delaying premature aging, and it makes your skin feel fresh and hydrated especially after a warm shower.

Step 3: Apply Sunscreen

Applying sunscreen is commonly overlooked. However, it is the most crucial step before you start your day. Sunscreen protects your skin from harmful ultraviolet rays. UV rays is a known cause of skin cancer. UV rays will also speed up the aging process, causing brown spots and discolorations to develop on your skin. Hence the importance of sunscreen.

If you’re in a rush or prefer a less complicated skincare routine, why not give these 3 simple steps a try? And, if you’re looking for an ideal place to shop for all things skincare, head over to the Curve. We have beauty retailers from Korea to France with a myriad of skin and beauty selections. Additionally, we house beauty and wellness salons too. So visit us this weekend for a pampering shopping experience unlike any other!

Forget stuffed toys and purchase a colourful set of crib sheets instead. After all, crib sheets need to be changed frequently, especially when there’s an accident. This makes it a practical gift that both mommy and daddy would truly appreciate.

#2 Cute Chewy Teether

Baby teethers help to soothe a baby’s gums when their teeth are coming in. Some babies may start teething sooner than others, so a chewy teether will make a useful gift for when that time comes around.

#3 Functional Baby Towel

One might choose to get a blanket but there are only so many blankets a baby can use at one time. Hence, a cute towel is a much better choice as the extras can come in handy whenever something unexpected happens.

#4 A Set Of Building Blocks

It’s never too early for a child to start activating his or her motor skills. Thus, a set of good quality building blocks will make a great gift—one that will be played with, even as the baby ages up into a toddler.

Travelling To A Cold Country? Pack These Things Now!

Travelling from a tropical climate to a cold country can be daunting. The unexpected cold can come as a surprise, and one might find oneself shivering throughout the entire trip without the proper attire. Hence, if you’re going to a four-season country during Autumn, Spring, or Winter, these are the 5 things you must have before you board your plane.

#1 Waterproof Parka & Warm Coats

Waterproof parkas ensure that you do not get drenched to the bone when the weather is not in your favour, while warm coats allow you to be more fashionable during sunnier days. Having both a waterproof parka and a selection of coats will keep you warm, allowing you to enjoy your vacation or get your work done without having to spend the entire day indoors.

#2 Waterproof Boots

Waterproof boots are essential, whether rain, shine, or snow. They ensure that your feet are kept dry and warm in unpredictable climate. After all, no one likes walking in wet shoes all day long. Hence, it is wise to invest in a good pair of waterproof boots before your trip.

#3 Sweaters

Sweaters give you the freedom to pull over an extra layer whenever it gets too chilly. They are versatile additions to your wardrobe that do not only keep you warm but add to your personal style too. From heavy wool sweaters to lighter cardigans, you’ll have a variety of outfits for those instagrammable vacation pictures.

#4 Scarves

Not only are scarves fashionable, they do a great job at keeping your neck warm. Scarves can be worn under your jacket or over your top, ensuring that you don’t get a chill. And, if it ever gets a little too warm, you can always toss it in your bag.

#5 Socks & Mittens

When your body regulates heat toward your internal organs—due to the cold environment—you will find your hands and feet getting cold. This will happen fairly often when in a cold country. Thus, having insulated mittens and wool socks will play a big role in keeping your hands and feet warm.

Travelling to a cold country soon?

You don’t have to fear visiting a toy store when you know what to look for. After all, toys are great tools to spark your child’s creativity. And to help you during your next toy shop excursion, here are the three types of toys you should be looking for!

#1 Problem Solving Toys

Any toy that requires your child to think in order to play is a must-have. Such toys encourage creative thinking and problem solving skills no matter the age of your child. The great news is, whether it be shapes, numbers, alphabets, or pictures, there are a plethora of puzzles in the market designed to challenge your child’s mind.

#2 Building Toys

Nothing sparks your child’s creativity than toys that incorporate building. These toys give children the freedom to think outside of the box as they create their very own imaginations from scratch—encouraging your child to form different perspectives in order to complete an imaginative creation.

#3 Imaginative Toys

Whether it be occupational tool sets or a box full of dinosaurs, toys that give children the opportunity to play pretend will boost their imagination. Imaginative play is a natural way for children to learn about the world, while they express themselves through their words and movement. Better yet, mum and dad can always join in!

8 Sinful Malaysian Desserts

Living in a melting pot like Malaysia, we are blessed with a plethora of delectable and mouth-watering desserts. But how sinful are our Malaysian desserts? It’s time to find out!

#1 Ais Kacang

Craving for a cold bowl of ais kacang on a hot day? One serving of ais kacang (ABC) is approximately 250 calories. One would argue that that’s not much for a sweet and refreshing treat.

#2 Goreng Pisang

Nothing beats a sweet deep-fried banana fritter. Sadly, some stalls only sell them in pisang emas size. And for a small goreng pisang, we’re consuming at least 95 calories per piece. Still, we’ll eat it anyway.

#3 Cendol

If ais kacang isn’t your jam, cendol probably is. Topped with a swirl of gula melaka, who could turn down a bowl of 380 calories? Granted, it is higher than the ais kacang but it’s all too flavourful to resist.

#4 Apam Balik

Sweet, salty, and crunchy, a freshly made apam balik is a ‘must buy’ from any morning market. Thankfully, one large piece is only 290 calories. What is a Malaysian breakfast without a slice?

#5 Bubur Cha Cha

Sweet potatoes, yam, and taro in a bowl of coconut soup is nothing but comfort food on a rainy day. It might be about 530 calories per bowl but there’s certainly a lot going on in one serving.

#6 Kuih Lapis

Whether it’s the Malay or the Chinese kuih lapis, one cannot go wrong with a piece of layered goodness, that is approximately 130 calories of sugar, rice flour, sago, and coconut milk.

#7 Kuih Loyang/ Beehive Cookies

How can one celebrate Chinese New Year and Hari Raya without these crunchy treats? We all know that it only takes one bite—one bite and we’ll be munching non-stop on 60 calories each time.

#8 Ondeh Ondeh

The perfect ondeh ondeh has a skin thin enough to house a burst of sweet gula melaka. The perfect ondeh ondeh is also around 45 calories a pop—not too bad if you eat it in moderation. But with Malaysian desserts, what is ‘moderation’?

What’s your favourite Malaysian dessert?

3 Supplements You Should Start Taking Today

We know that supplements are important for our bodies. But if it is your first time shopping for supplements, it can be confusing. Which supplement should you go for? What does your body actually need? If the plethora of vitamins and minerals available overwhelms you, then this article is for you. Here are the top 3 supplements that you should start taking today!

#1 Multivitamin

Multivitamins are the easiest way to boost your intake of daily vitamins with a single tablet. However, when purchasing multivitamins, be sure that it contains vitamin D, magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, folate, and vitamin B-12. These are important minerals and vital vitamins that we don’t receive enough of on a daily basis.

#2 Omega-3

Omega-3 fatty acids are important nutrients for the brain, heart, and skin—it is proven to lower inflammation and assist with recovery. Unfortunately, the average human diet is low in omega-3s and high in omega-6s. Hence, in order to keep the body in balance—a 1:1 ratio of omega-3s to omega-6s—daily supplementation is encouraged. Getting enough omega-3s, in the form of fish oil capsules, is said to improve the overall health of the human body.

#3 Probiotics

Your gut health is more important than you think. Having enough good and healthy bacteria in our gut will improve nutrient absorption and digestion, regulate bowel movement, eliminate toxins, and boost our immune system. A healthy gut can elevate your mood, appetite, and sleep as well. Though it is a commonly overlooked supplement, probiotics are no less important for a healthy body.

Ready to start supplementing? Look for the supplements above!

The Curve homes reliable pharmacies and health retailers for all your supplement needs. Rest assured, you’ll find a myriad of trusted brands to choose from, alongside professional advice from health experts during your next visit!

5 Hairstyles You Wouldn’t Believe Were #TRENDING!

Not all trending hairstyles were great. It’s safe to say that some of them shouldn’t be trending in the first place. These are 5 hairstyles that were once on trend. What do you think—should these hairstyles be brought back?

#1 Granny Hair Colour

While those in their fifties attempt to cover up their grey hair with any other hair colour in the market, there are those who purposefully dye their hair grey. This is known as the granny hair colour. And though it might work for some individuals, it is one hair colour we don’t have to rush into—take your time to contemplate and soon, nature will run its course.

#2 Wet Hair Look

The wet hair look was first seen at the 2018 New York Fashion Week. Models with hairstyles designed by Jason Wu stalked the runway with wet, sleek hair—the look we all embrace the moment we step out of the shower, or when we find ourselves without an umbrella on a rainy day.

#3 Liberty Spikes

Did you ever have spiky hair in secondary school? The Liberty Spikes, coined after the Statue of Liberty, takes spiky hair to a whole new level. The long, thick, and upright spikes require the strongest hair gel known to men. So if you can’t seem to find a hair gel to keep your hair in place, you might want to speak to someone who can successfully pull the look off.

#4 The Mullet

The mullet was trending in the 80s and popularised in the 90s by The Beastie Boys. A short cut in the front and the sides but long at the back, it is certainly a hairstyle we do not see as often. And perhaps, that’s a good thing as many would agree that a mullet should never return as a trend—a style best kept in the past.

#5 Emo & Overgrown

This is perhaps the least unbelievable of them all as most would go through a nostalgic phase of emo and overgrown hair. Simply look back at your yearbook and you’ll find a friend—if not you—with a fringe almost poking the eyes. As memorable as those days were, so was this hairstyle trend.

Hoping to get a new hairdo?

We would advise against the five above. Instead, drop by one of our professional hair salons at the Curve for a style that is trending at this moment. Rest assured, they do not do any of the hairstyles above.

What Your Glasses Say About You

Have you ever wondered what your glasses actually say about you? According to Reader’s Digest, the style, colour, and design of your glasses can reveal a lot about your personality. So let’s find out if what research has to say is true!

#1 Is your frame colourful, black, or patterned?

If your frame is in vibrant and playful colours, you’re most probably a creative person—outgoing and artistic people tend to gravitate toward bold and bright frames. But if your frame is black, you’re more likely a young and trendy individual—dark and thick frames are commonly worn amongst the young, bold, and opinionated. And if your frame has patterns, the odds of you being female with a cheerful personality is high—stylish glasses are often worn by older individuals who love to have fun.

#2 Are you wearing an aviator, a tortoise shell, or a minimalist frame?

Those who wear aviators tend to be risk takers—unafraid to live in the moment with a bold, adventurous, and outspoken personality. Tortoise shell or horn-rimmed glasses are typically worn amongst creative and independent individuals with a taste for vintage and art. And for those who love simple and clean frames, these people tend to be more logical, structured, and detail-oriented.

#3 Do you prefer browline or big round frames?

Browline frames or semi-rimless frames are worn by well-rounded personalities who are ready for business—a common choice for knowledgeable individuals with eyes on the prize. In comparison, those who choose big round frames tend to be quirkier individuals with an appreciation for vintage styles that are still on trend.

So, what does your glasses say about you?

If you’re looking for a new pair of glasses, make your way to the Curve now! We have a selection of optical stores for prescription and stylish glasses that will not only aid your vision but add to your personal style too.

Looking For A Thoughtful Gift For HIM? Check These Out!

What is your safest bet when shopping for your man? Electronics are subjective, belts and wallets are often cliche, and perhaps a bottle of whisky might not be the healthiest choice. In this case, what can you get him? Here are 5 gift suggestions that can’t go wrong!

#1 Timepiece

Unless he believes it’s a taboo, a classy timepiece often gets the job done. Depending on the brand and design, a watch might be a little high on your budget. However, it certainly makes for a practical and stylish gift with a personal touch—an ideal thoughtful gift for your man.

#2 Shoes

This might not be the kind of gift you can surprise him with but it will not disappoint. A good pair of shoes can make a difference in one’s appearance and self-confidence. And since there’s nothing wrong with wanting your man to look his best, getting him a pair that fits well will make this gift all the more thoughtful.

#3 Sports Goods

If your man loves getting sweaty, then sportswear and sports equipment might just be the perfect gift for him. Showing support for his passion and hobbies can go a long way. However, he might be picky with what he wears and uses, so it’s best to do a little research on his favourite brands before making a decision.

#4 Sunglasses

More often than not, men receive shirts from their significant others. However, the less common gift—perhaps because it’s much harder to shop for—are sunglasses. If this item has never been on your list, it might be the time to surprise him with something different.

#5 Backpack

Whether for travel, work, or play, a backpack is a practical and versatile gift. And even more so if your man uses a backpack on a daily basis. A functional gift that serves a purpose is almost always considered thoughtful. So if you’re running out of ideas, a backpack might be the way to go.

Have An Idea On What To Get?

Head over to the Curve to find what you’re looking for! From imported timepieces and à la mode apparel, you’ll walk out with a thoughtful gift for your man in no time.

Looking For A Romantic Gift For HER? Check These Out!

Whether it’s for her birthday, your anniversary, the upcoming holidays, or just as a surprise, looking for a romantic gift can be a challenge. But fret not, we’re here to help! Here are five romantic gift options to choose from for your next shopping trip!

#1 Jewellery

If you’ve been saving up or have extra ka-ching to spend, a necklace and bracelet would be your first choice as a romantic gift. In fact, you’ve probably thought of this idea already! But, do bear in mind that not all girls don accessories. So if you notice that your girl doesn’t wear jewellery, an elegant timepiece would make for a great alternative.

#2 Perfume

She probably hasn’t mentioned this to you but she knows your scent. And since scent plays an important role in attraction, finding a perfume that fits her character and style would make for a romantic personalised gift. Just don’t forget to mention that you chose it because it reminded you of her!

#3 Skincare

Even the most low-maintenance girl has a simple skincare routine, so what better gift than a skincare range from her favourite brand! You’ll be required to do a little research—perhaps a peek at her dressing table. But once you know, you can’t go wrong with a brand she trusts and uses every single day.

#4 Lingerie

This might be a little scandalous but if you frequently find yourself accompanying your girl into Victoria’s Secret, then you know what to get her—a comfortable sleepwear for the night, especially after a long and busy day, can’t possibly go wrong. After all, who doesn’t appreciate a good night’s rest?

#5 Facial & Massage

This might not apply to all girls but most do enjoy a relaxing facial and massage. But instead of handing her a voucher, such a treat should be paired with a day out—where you accompany her to a salon before sharing a meal. The effort you put in wouldn’t just be money spent but time she would appreciate and remember.

Will Drinking Coffee Regularly Kill You?

Did you know that a cup of coffee contains approximately 100 to 200 milligrams of caffeine? But don’t worry—one cup, two cups, or even three cups itself will not kill you. Depending on the person, it takes somewhere around 10 grams of caffeine to be overdosed. And most of the time, the only way to consume that much caffeine is through powder or tablet form. But the question still remains—is drinking coffee regularly good or bad?

The Good: Research has shown that caffeine can help with tiredness, increasing one’s energy and concentration levels. It can also reduce post-workout muscle soreness by 48%, and provide protection from liver cirrhosis, Parkinson’s disease, and heart disease. Additionally, it lowers the risk of Type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and even colorectal and liver cancer.

The Bad: For some individuals, caffeine keeps them up past their bedtime—making it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. As caffeine is also a diuretic, it can cause dehydration. In higher doses, caffeine can cause headache, nausea, jitteriness, and irritability. However, the only time caffeine kills is when it is consumed in excessively large amounts over a short period of time. Thus, it is an individual’s responsibility to watch one’s own caffeine consumption especially when it comes to caffeine pills and powdered caffeine.

Should you continue to drink coffee?

If you’re someone with heart conditions, caffeine sensitivity, or are pregnant, it is advisable to stick to decaf. Adolescents are also advised not to consume more than 100 milligrams of caffeine a day by the Academy of Pediatrics, and children are to abstain from caffeine all together. But if you’re a regular, healthy adult who loves coffee, a cup or two a day won’t kill you. The only problem you’ll have... is finding a good, aromatic cup to start your day.
